Weymouth planters designed by award-winning gardener

On behalf of the council and residents, we’d like to say a big thank you to the Hope Square Flower Power group, part of the South Harbourside Collective, for their work to design and maintain the brand-new planters in Hope Square.

The group teamed up with Michelle Brown, who has previously won 3 awards at the Chelsea Flower Show, to design the displays in the planters. Plants were supplied at a reduced rate by Weymouth’s Gould Garden Centre in support of the community project.

The planters are fully weatherproof and can be moved to accommodate events when needed. They will add a welcome burst of colour to the square and provide additional seating for residents and visitors.

Charlie James, Leader of the Hope Square Flower Power group, commented:

“The lockdowns have reminded us how important public spaces are, and so it’s been wonderful to see the local community come together in the planting and maintenance of these green spaces in Hope Square.

“They’ve added a vibrancy to the area and have already become a popular place to pause, people watch or meet up with friends. We had so many people stop and chat to us when we were doing the planting, everyone who spoke to us was delighted to see what was happening.”

A spokesperson for the council added:

“This is a fantastic way to add colour and extra seating to this popular area of the town. We’re delighted to have benefitted from Michelle Brown’s expertise in designing the planters and we can’t wait to see them in full bloom this summer!

“We’re so grateful to the volunteers from the South Harbourside Collective who are giving up their time to keep the planters looking so fantastic, so they can be enjoyed by the whole community.”
