Dementia Friendly Health Walks One Year Anniversary

Weymouth & Portland Health Walks have been running for just over a year now and to mark this achievement, various health walk events will be taking place throughout the month of May. The twice-monthly walk from St Ann’s Church in Radipole began a year ago; it was started as part of Dementia Awareness Week and couples with a dementia-friendly church service on the first Monday of the month. The first anniversary of the walk falls on Monday 20th May at 1.30pm from St Ann’s Church, and the volunteer Health Walk leaders thought it would be nice to mark the occasion, especially as that day is the start of Dementia Awareness Week this year.

Jane Biscombe – Weymouth Town Clerk said: “As a town council we are very pleased to continue supporting this wonderful project. The walkers attending this special walk have travelled over 125 miles on foot. The Walking for Health project in Weymouth has helped people to walk over 3500 miles in a year – a massive total of 312,000 calories burnt.  As a town council we are keen to support regular activity which will help ward off disease, help you stay independent, reduce the risk of falls and give you more energy – but most of all it can be great fun.”

The special walk will be a gentle walk through the woods, with a stop for a picnic tea on the picnic table. There is no service that day and so the walk will start as normal at 1.30pm and stops for tea halfway round with no time constraints. In the unlikely event that it rains, we can picnic in the church hall instead (after the walk if anyone is up for it!).  If you are interested in attending this walk, please contact Julie Hursthouse, Community Development Officer.
