Grants awarded to community projects

Three grants were awarded at last night’s Finance and Governance Committee meeting (Wednesday 20th July) to benefit community projects in Weymouth.

Weymouth Basketball Club was awarded £1,500 towards basketball kits as they don’t have enough for all the teams. They run basketball sessions for nine-year-olds through to adults and want to encourage people of all ages to play and be involved in the sport.

Since taking over a former youth club building, SPARK – Southill Park and Recreation for Kids – have been modernising it. They were awarded £2,250 towards removing old lighting dating back to the 1970s and replacing it with modern LED lighting.

A request to help refurbish a disabled toilet at Weymouth and Melcombe Regis Bowls Club was also approved. The club applied for £1,650 towards updating the décor and providing a new low level hand basin with taps, new toilet rails and a new accessible warm water heater.

Committee Chair Cllr David Gray said: “Supporting community groups with projects that directly benefit Weymouth residents is a real priority for Weymouth Town Council. We approved these applications at Finance and Governance Committee on Wednesday night, and I would urge other community groups and charitable organisations to come forward and apply for funding to help get their ideas off the ground.”
