Communities benefit from multiple Weymouth Town Council grants!

From refurbishments to disabled toilet facilities to providing basketball kits, Weymouth Town Council has awarded just over £50,000 to community, voluntary and charitable organisations for various projects benefitting Weymouth residents.  

And as another year of providing grants comes to an end, the town council is making people aware that from April, groups will be able to apply for funding to help pay towards the cost of new projects, equipment, events, or training over the coming year.  

Organisations that benefitted from grant funding over the last year include:

• Life Education Wessex and Thames Valley  
• Weymouth Museum Trust  
• Citizens Advice Central Dorset   
• STEPS Club for Young People  
• Wyke Regis Christmas Fayre  
• Refresh   
• Westham Community Group  
• Ridgeway Community Radio CIC (Trading as Keep 106)  
• Friends of Weymouth Peace Garden (pictured above)
• Dorset Council – Health & Activity Team  
• Chesil Sailability  
• Weymouth East Scout Group  
• Nothe Fort  
• The Nest  
• The Lantern Trust 
• Weymouth Area Development Trust 

Weymouth & Melcombe Regis Bowls Club for example wanted to carry out refurbishments to their disabled toilet facility including improving the décor, providing a new low level hand basin with taps, new toilet rails and a new accessible warm water heater. The £1,650 grant helped towards making these improvements for members with restricted mobility.  

Refresh and Westham Community Group combined were donated £5,000 towards Warm Welcome, providing safe places to access for those in need or experiencing homelessness. 

Cllr Gill Taylor, Weymouth Town Council’s Community Champion, said of the grant: “The £5,000 grant provided the opportunity for both communities to come together to provide a warm welcome for those in need during the winter season. If you’re a community group and needing some extra help with funding, I encourage you to apply for a grant from Weymouth Town Council. It’s an easy process to follow, and you will receive help and guidance on how to apply.”  

Chair of Finance and Governance Committee, Cllr David Gray, added: “We are proud to help communities around Weymouth and it’s great to see so many communities and local charities benefitting from funding. The Finance and Governance Committee approved many community grants over the course of the year, and I would recommend others start thinking about what they might want to apply for that will help make a difference to the lives of residents in our town.”  

Two types of grants are available from Weymouth Town Council:  

• £250 and under 

• £250 and over. Larger grant applications go to the town council’s Finance and Governance Committee for a decision and the next meeting is on Wednesday 26^th April. So, if your community group would like to be considered for a grant of over £250, please apply no later than two weeks before the committee meeting date.
