Have your say on Weymouth’s parks and open spaces

Weymouth Town Council are asking for feedback from residents about parks and open spaces in and around the town.

The council own and maintain 14 parks and open spaces, including Radipole Park and Gardens, Lodmoor Country Park and the award-winning Greenhill Gardens. As well as promoting biodiversity and protecting wildlife, Weymouth’s green spaces are extremely beneficial for residents and visitors to the town. 

There are around 91 hectares of green space in Weymouth and the sport courts and play areas are some of the most frequently used leisure facilities in the town. The spaces are also used by the community for a number of activities and events.

The pandemic has seen an increase in use of public spaces. They have been vital for many local people to get outside, exercise, relax, and generally maintain wellbeing. The gardening team work hard all year round to maintain our gardens, parks and play areas to a high standard.

Residents’ feedback gathered from the survey will be used to improve these parks and open spaces to make them even better for the community. It will help the council to plan for the coming year and to understand how our public spaces can best meet the needs of the community.

Cllr David Northam, Chair of the Services Committee said:

“We’re looking forward to hearing residents’ feedback and hope people will complete this short survey to tell us what they like about our open spaces, but also what we can do to make them even better for the community.

We know our parks, gardens, play areas and open spaces are hugely valued by the community and have been especially important for many over the last year. In normal times our parks are well used by various community groups and for schemes such as Weymouth Health Walks, which offer residents of all walking abilities the chance to meet and exercise together. Our gardens also play host to a number of events, including smaller scale community fairs and fundraising events.”

Community events and activities in Weymouth’s parks and open spaces are all currently postponed or cancelled due to restrictions. The council hope to be able to facilitate events and activities for the public again when possible and encourage visitors to use the spaces to their full potential.
