Oh we do like to be beside the award-winning seaside
Charity reveals country’s best beaches with announcement of Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for 2019
This year, environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy is presenting 208 awards to England’s very best beaches, including 71 international Blue Flags and 137 Seaside Awards, with 52 beaches achieving both awards. This includes awards to Weymouth Town Council’s Weymouth Beach.
Weymouth joins the country’s very best beaches, from popular holiday spots to quiet, more hidden-away spots. What unites them all is knowing that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.
The attainment of these two prestigious awards is not only due to the hard work of Weymouth Town Council, but also recognises the invaluable input from the community in caring for our very special and unique environment. Weymouth Town Council works with many partners such as local businesses, RNLI lifeguards and Dorset Waste Partnership in order to maintain the standards that residents and visitors expect when visiting an award-winning beach such as Weymouth’s.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:
“The success of the 156 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.”
“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”
Weymouth Town Clerk, Jane Biscombe said:
“Once again, by gaining these awards, Weymouth Beach is shown to be among the best in the country. Over a million visitors return to Weymouth every year to enjoy our coastline and the Town Council are committed to making sure that this continues for many years to come. The beach is also an important part of Weymouth resident’s lives for leisure, rest and recreation, and it’s wonderful to work in an area where the residents are as passionate as we are. I am especially thankful to our dedicated beach management team and partners who work together to ensure Weymouth beach is a safe and enjoyable place to be. Well done Team Weymouth!!”
