Meet the team: Will

Meet Will, our Beach Supervisor for Weymouth’s award-winning beach.
Since starting as a summer deckchair attendant in 2015, Will has been promoted within the beach team, taking on a range of different roles over the years. During that time, he has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience:

“In my role things can be different every day. In the middle of August I’ll be making sure the deckchair operation is running smoothly, staff are doing their job role for the day and working closely with the RNLI and emergency services where needed. We manage 2 phone lines, 2 email address, 15 members of staff, and our beach office, which is open for public enquiries. So, with over 35 thousand people on the beach (including lost children!) – things can certainly get busy!”

During autumn and winter, the beach team must be ready to respond to any issues. Certain maintenance jobs need to be arranged and overseen to prepare for the colder months, such as dredging and flood defences.

At this time of year, the team also get opportunity to implement projects or ideas to help improve services before the summer. Recently Will has been busy preparing for the warmer months and potential changes to coronavirus restrictions:

“I have been sorting the charity stalls out for this coming year, making sure all deckchair operation equipment is ready, getting staff ready to start, planning beach and promenade maintenance”

Will is particularly proud of a project he’s been working on to update information signs on the promenade:

“It has been a very long process, as our current signs needed some love! They were slightly outdated, so we had to start from scratch. I have tried to modernise certain aspects, with QR codes, Google search terms, etc.”

Will was drawn to his role as he liked the idea of working outside and helping to maintain a place that is so valuable to the community and enjoyed by so many.

“One of the best things about my job is working with the other members of staff. From our lost children attendants to the Beach manager, who is like a father to us all! It is just amazing to work in job where you would happily go for a coffee with any of your colleagues out of work time. You can’t be unhappy working so close to the beach can you, plus we have a rather nice view from the office!”
