Apply for a grant to celebrate VE Day 80 in Weymouth
Celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day in Weymouth are taking shape, and today (Monday 3rd February) Weymouth Town Council launched a grants scheme for local groups to run their own events.
These activities will complement the Council’s confirmed events which take place on May 8th and 10th and include a beacon lighting, a flag raising ceremony, and a music concert on the beach.
To honour this shared moment of celebration, the Council’s Environment and Services Committee agreed £3,500 is made available for community and voluntary groups to put on VE Day-themed events.
Each group can apply for up to £350 towards costs of their activity including food and refreshments, decorations, entertainment, equipment and materials, displays and educational activities, venue hire or insurance. Grants can only be used for events and activities to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day between Wednesday 30th April – Wednesday 21st May 2025.
For all the details on how to apply, including submitting an online form, visit the Town Council’s website. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday 9th April.
Cllr Matt Bell, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said: “I am so pleased to announce applications are now open for local groups to apply for funding to put on a variety of events to bring our communities together to honour and celebrate VE-Day in Weymouth. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the date the war in Europe and WWII ended, and by making this funding available we hope to see a good spread of entertainment taking place across the town.”
Weymouth Town Council will host the following events:
Thursday 8th May – Raising the VE Day Flag, 9am at Weymouth Cenotaph.
VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting, 9.30pm by the Jubilee Clock with short ceremony.
Saturday 10th May – A live music concert will be held on the beach, featuring local bands and musicians. The concert will include a mix of music genres, and a focus on songs from the era to honour the VE Day theme. People are encouraged to bring a picnic, blankets, chairs to create a relaxed, festival-like atmosphere. Further details on timings and performers will be released nearer the time.
