Greenhill Gardens and Sandsfoot Gardens awarded the coveted Green Flag Award as they are officially recognised as two of the country’s best parks!

Today, Weymouth Town Council is celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award for Greenhill Gardens and Sandsfoot Gardens.

The news that Greenhill Gardens and Sandsfoot Gardens retained the accreditation – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for these green spaces so that everyone can enjoy them.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in both gardens in achieving a Green Flag Award.

“Greenhill and Sandsfoot are both a vital green space for the community in Weymouth bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Kate Wheller, added: “I’m absolutely delighted that both Greenhill Gardens and Sandsfoot Gardens have been awarded Green Flag status for another year running. They are beautiful places to visit with amazing viewpoints across Weymouth Bay and The Nothe Fort.

“Congratulations to the team at Weymouth Town Council, especially the greenspaces team for all the hard work they put in everyday to make both gardens such lovely places to be.”

The clockhouse at Greenhill is one of the highlights of the gardens and is currently having a refurbishment. The replacement of the clockhouse will allow the public to see the fascinating workings of the clock, giving them the pride of place they deserve. This project has been designed, managed and funded by the wonderful Friends of Greenhill Gardens.

Sandsfoot Gardens is a great open space near the Rodwell Trail and offers a café, toilets, amazing coastal views, along with the ruins of Sandsfoot Castle. A feature pond with a fountain provides another focal point of the gardens.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
