Update from Environment and Services Committee
Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee agreed to contribute £2,000 to support Stop Portland Waste Incinerator’s legal challenge on the proposed incinerator. The decision was taken at the meeting held on Wednesday 30th October.
The group has mounted a legal challenge to the Government’s decision to give the go ahead for the new waste incinerator plant on Portland.
The Committee also agreed the Town Clerk will write a letter from the Mayor, The Leader of the Council, and the Chair of the Environment and Services Committee to send to the Government and the Environment Agency restating Weymouth Town Council’s objections to the incinerator.
The Council will also ask for a moratorium on future decisions on incinerators until the Government has considered the precautionary principle to health risks required by the UK Interdepartmental Liaison Group on Risk Assessment.
Weymouth Town Council has written to the Stop Portland Waste Incinerator to advise them about the £2,000 contribution towards the legal challenge.
