Weymouth to recognise Armed Forces Day 2020

This year’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in Weymouth, which were due to be held between Saturday 20th and Monday 22nd June, will not be taking place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The hugely popular annual event is one of Weymouth’s iconic festivals, often attracting over 40,000 visitors. It has been running for over 25 years and is a favourite with veterans and military families from all over the country. Event organisers Weymouth Town Council will continue their strong links with the Ministry of Defence and many veterans’ associations and will continue with plans to hold the event once again in 2021.

Cllr Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council, said:

“I am hugely disappointed that we are unable to hold this year’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. The event creates a wonderful atmosphere and the community love playing host to many visitors including veterans, armed forces personnel, family, and friends. The parade on Weymouth seafront is indeed one the town’s proudest moments and a stunning spectacle for all involved. We look forward to hosting a magnificent Armed Forces Day event in 2021 and welcoming back our many visitors who love Weymouth.”

“I will be recording a personal message to our veterans and community regarding the Armed Forces event, which will be available on Weymouth Town Council’s Facebook page. I encourage you all to support Armed Forces Day from your home.”

Weymouth Town Council will be flying the Armed Forces Day flag outside the Council Offices on Monday 22nd June, the day which the annual flag raising ceremony would have taken place.

Armed Forces Day is a national event celebrated annually in late June to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. This year’s Armed Forces Day is on Saturday 27th June.

Please show support from your homes to pay tribute to the British Armed Forces for their hard work, dedication and efforts to keep us safe. To find out how to get involved, please visit the official Armed Forces Day website: www.armedforcesday.org.uk/get-involved/

Weymouth’s Armed Forces Day 2021 celebrations will take place from Saturday 19th to Monday 21st June.
